The Legacy of Hard Work and Risk

My father, a contractor, learned his craft with the Army Corps of Engineers, building roads in jungles near war zones. After returning to the U.S., he founded Construction Inc., a small company specializing in road building, sewer line installation, and large-scale earthmoving.

His El Camino was both office and transport, loaded with tools, blueprints, and a thermos. At job sites, he would operate heavy machinery, digging trenches and installing sewer pipes, often in precarious conditions. Despite the constant danger, he embraced the risks, famously saying, “Sewers are the arteries of civilization.”

My father passed away doing what he loved. As a lawyer, I honor his memory by advocating for those who risk their lives in construction work.

The Dangers of Construction Work

Construction is one of America’s most dangerous jobs, with serious and often fatal injuries occurring daily. Approximately two construction-related deaths happen each day in the United States, making up one in every five work-related fatalities. Despite OSHA’s safety regulations, construction sites remain hazardous due to insufficient enforcement caused by staffing and budget constraints.

The Fatal Four

Most construction injuries stem from the “Fatal Four”: falls, electrocution, being struck by objects, and being caught between objects. These accidents are often preventable with proper safety policies and equipment maintenance.

Falls: Responsible for almost 40% of construction injuries and deaths. Causes include improper scaffolding, poor maintenance, unprotected openings, and ladder misuse. Safety training and protective gear like harnesses can significantly reduce fall incidents.

Struck by Objects: Over 10% of injuries and deaths are due to being struck by vehicles, falling tools, or masonry walls. Such accidents can result in severe head, neck, and back injuries, leading to prolonged or permanent disability.

Electrocution: Nearly 9% of construction accidents involve contact with high voltage wires. These can cause severe injuries like amputations, burns, and sudden death due to improper use and maintenance of electrical components.

Caught Between Objects: Around 3% of construction accidents occur when workers are trapped between objects, often due to unsafe equipment or improper spoil-pile placement.

Immediate Steps After a Construction Accident

  • Seek Medical Attention: Promptly address any injuries.
  • Document the Incident: Report the accident to your employer and gather witness statements.
  • Collect Evidence: Take photos of the injury and accident site.
  • Contact a Lawyer: An experienced construction accident lawyer can help secure compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
